Of Mice and Men

Of Mice and Men is a story about the friendship between two unusual farmers who lived during the Great Depression, and their dream about a better life. George takes care of his avoid and kind friend Lennie. One day, Lennie do something wrong and George must help him out. You can read more about Mice and Men here.
In this text I am going to answer the following questions: “why do you think the story starts and ends in the same place? Is this related to the theme of “the American Dream?” I have chosen this task because I found it very interesting.
First, I want to explain the term “American Dream”. Wisegeek.com says that the term “American Dream” is an idea which suggests that all people have the potential to live happy. Success full lives. I think John Steinbeck disagreees with this, becuase many people in the book do have dreams, but they not come true.
The story starts with Lennie and George who need money to realise their dream. They start with nothing, but they are going to work hard and earn money. Throughout the book they do this, and their inspiration is always a new and better life, but they end up with nothing. I think this is relevant because we know in reflection that the “American Dream” often did not happen. Many people ended their dream where they started. It is also important to mention that many people did succeed. Lennie – who was retarded – did not have many chances to succeed.
I think the book starts and ends in the same place because Steinbeck, the author wants to show what happened with the most people who started with nothing. Lennie and George did this, and they just got trouble and no money. Therefore, I think this is relevant to the “American Dream”. If we think about the definition of the “American Dream” – to start with nothing, work hard and end up with success, is this very relevant. Lennie and George believed in this, and they ended up with nothing, as many other.
